Neurological Physiotherapy focuses on the treatment of individuals with neurological conditions which affect the functioning of the brain, spinal cord, and nerves. With these conditions, the messages between the brain and the body can be interrupted and affect a variety of areas, requiring differing expertise. As a result, patients will often benefit from a multidisciplinary team approach involving physiotherapy, exercise physiology, speech therapy, occupational therapy, dietetics with assistance of doctors, and nurses.

These conditions commonly present with loss of movement, sensation, coordination, and balance. They may also affect perception, speech, memory, cognition, and behaviours.

Neurological physiotherapy aims to assist individuals in maintaining and improving available movement and functional independence. This is done through a combination of manual therapy to reduce spasticity and mobilise joints, advice, and education for adjustments to daily tasks and exercise-based interventions. Exercise interventions may include a combination of:

  • Strengthening
  • Balance
  • Gait re-training
  • Stretching
  • Postural exercises

The goal of these interventions is to help create new pathways in the brain through repetition and exercise. This is known as neuroplasticity.
