Falls and Balance

Falls are the second leading cause of unintentional injury deaths globally. Worldwide, an estimated 684,000 people die from falls annually, with 37.3 million falls requiring medical attention. Those over 60 represent the majority of fatal falls and can be caused by a number of risk factors which may be associated with physical, sensory or cognitive changes.

Management of Falls

Depending on the causes of an individual’s falls, a combination of interventions may be considered. These may include a review of medications and the home environment, and a tailored exercise program.

You will initially be assessed by one of our Physiotherapists or Exercise Physiologists who will assess your balance, strength, and mobility. Your therapist will then tailor an exercise program based on your ability. This program will generally be a home exercise program; however, we encourage patients to engage with our classes run by Physiotherapists and Exercise Physiologists.

We offer small group-based exercise classes where each participant will work through their tailored program in a safe and supervised environment, progressing and regressing exercises as required. We also teach participants how to get off the floor to avoid a long lie waiting for assistance.
